AMD Adrenalin Install Loop: Fixing Errors 182, 1603 and Driver Mismatch

Short answer: To fix an AMD Adrenalin install loop (AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition), find the error number first, because AMD documents a different fix for each. Error 182 means your GPU is not supported by that package (legacy, embedded or OEM-customized graphics). Error 1603 is a general install failure: update Windows, run the AMD Cleanup Utility and reinstall. If AMD Software says it is not compatible with your driver, run AMD’s Software Compatibility Tool. If Windows Update keeps replacing the driver, AMD says to switch off automatic device installation temporarily and reinstall.

AMD Adrenalin install loop: match your error to AMD’s fix

AMD’s installer writes a log to C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM\Log\Install.log. AMD asks you to attach it if you contact support.

Error 182: your GPU is not supported by this package

AMD’s article on error 182 says the installer stops when the detected graphics belong to one of three groups:

• Embedded AMD Radeon graphics. Choose Graphics > Radeon Embedded in the product selector on AMD’s driver site.
• Legacy AMD Radeon graphics. AMD lists many older products, including Radeon R9 Fury, R9 300 and 200 series, HD 7000 and 8000 series, and older A-series APUs. They get a final legacy driver package. Search your exact model on AMD’s support site.
• Customized graphics in OEM systems. AMD recommends the driver from the PC or laptop maker.

For some very old GPUs on Windows 10, AMD says driver support is available only through Windows Update. For Radeon HD 2000 to HD 4000 series cards, it names driver version 8.970.100.9001.

This fits the current release notes too. The notes for Adrenalin Edition 26.9.1 list Radeon RX 5000 series and newer as compatible. They also say AMD recommends OEM-provided drivers for laptops and all-in-one PCs, and that the package does not support handheld gaming devices. If you have one of those, the maker’s driver is the correct one, and no amount of reinstalling will get past error 182.

Error 1603: a general install failure

AMD lists these causes for error 1603: driver and software conflicts, false positives from antivirus software, missing Windows updates, corrupted Visual C++ Redistributable files, and corrupted registry keys or system files. Its recommended steps, in order:

1. Update Windows. Install all critical and important updates first.
2. Use the full package from AMD’s driver site, not a partial download.
3. Stop antivirus interference. AMD says scans can block files the installer needs. Update your security software, or disable it until the install finishes.
4. Do a selective startup. Disable non-Microsoft services and startup items with the System Configuration tool. Make sure required services, such as Plug and Play, are running.
5. Repair Visual C++. Reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages from Microsoft.
6. Repair Windows files. In an administrator Command Prompt, run:

   DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
   SFC /SCANNOW

   AMD notes DISM may seem to pause at 20% for a few minutes.

7. Clear conflicts. Run the AMD Cleanup Utility, or Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter, to remove the installed AMD components.

The AMD Cleanup Utility, step by step

AMD’s own tool for a stuck or broken install is the AMD Cleanup Utility. AMD’s page for it was last updated September 29, 2025.

• What it removes: previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers and software.
• What it does not touch: AMD chipset drivers.
• Where to get it: the link on AMD’s article, which points to drivers.amd.com/drivers/amdcleanuputility.exe.

1. Run amdcleanuputility.exe. When asked, click Yes to reboot into Safe Mode. AMD recommends Safe Mode “for best results.”
2. Click OK to start. The screen may flicker or go blank for a moment, which AMD calls normal.
3. Let it finish. AMD says it can take 15 to 20 minutes. Do not relaunch it.
4. Click View Report if you want the list of removed components, then Finish and reboot.

If Windows Update is running, the utility stops and asks you to let the update finish first. It creates a System Restore point named “AMD Cleanup Utility Restore Point” before it cleans, so you can roll back if something goes wrong. AMD’s release notes also recommend running it before you downgrade to an older Adrenalin version.

Factory Reset: the installer’s built-in clean install

AMD’s installer has its own clean-install switch. Under Additional Options it offers Factory Reset (Optional). AMD’s install guide says it “Removes all prior versions of the AMD Software Package and temporarily pauses Windows Updates,” restarts the PC, and continues the installation automatically after the reboot.

AMD’s warning: you will not be able to roll back to the previously installed drivers. AMD’s Auto-detect and Install guide adds a Keep user settings option on systems that already have AMD Software installed.

When Windows Update keeps replacing the driver

If the install completes with error 205, AMD says Windows may have reverted your driver afterward. AMD’s fix:

1. Type sysdm.cpl in the taskbar search and press Enter.
2. On the Hardware tab, click Device Installation Settings.
3. Choose No, click Save Changes and restart.
4. Reinstall the AMD Software package.

AMD describes this as a temporary change but does not say when to undo it. Make a note that you changed it, so you can set it back to Yes later if you want Windows to manage device installation again.

“Not compatible” popup: the AMD Software Compatibility Tool

Sometimes the driver installs, but AMD Software shows a message that its version is not compatible with the installed graphics driver, then refuses to launch. AMD’s article on this says to run the AMD Software Compatibility Tool, which “should automatically find and install a compatible version of AMD Software for the currently installed AMD graphics driver.” AMD adds that drivers delivered early to Windows Insider builds may have no matching AMD Software version yet.

Current version and requirements

The newest release notes we could open were for AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.1, last updated September 3, 2026. They list support for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later and Windows 10 64-bit version 21H2 and later. AMD’s general install guide still says Windows 10 version 1809 and later. What these fixes will not do

• They will not install a current Adrenalin package on hardware AMD has moved to legacy support. Error 182 is AMD saying so.
• They will not replace an OEM driver on a laptop, all-in-one or handheld. AMD points you to the maker.
• They do not fix hardware faults. If a clean install succeeds and the system still crashes, contact AMD or your card’s maker.

What does AMD error 182 mean?

The installer found AMD graphics that this package does not support: embedded, legacy or OEM-customized graphics. You need the driver AMD or the PC maker provides for that hardware.

How do I fix AMD error 1603?

Install Windows updates, disable non-Microsoft startup items, repair Visual C++ and system files with DISM and SFC, then run the AMD Cleanup Utility and reinstall. These are AMD’s documented steps.

Does the AMD Cleanup Utility remove chipset drivers?

No. AMD says it does not remove or modify AMD chipset drivers.

Should I use Factory Reset every time I update?

Why does Windows keep installing an older AMD driver?

Why won’t AMD’s driver install on my laptop?

AMD recommends the laptop maker’s drivers, which are customized for that system. If the amd.com package fails or misbehaves, AMD says to install the OEM driver.
