Firefox is a free, open-source web browser made by Mozilla. It blocks many known trackers by default, supports extensions, and can sync bookmarks, passwords and open tabs between devices with a Mozilla account. The current desktop version is 156.0.1, first offered on the release channel on 22 September 2026.
Who it suits
- People who want a browser that is not built on Chromium.
- Users who care about tracking protection and add-ons.
- Anyone who wants the same browser and synced data on a computer and phone.
How to get the official version
Mozilla’s download site is now firefox.com; old mozilla.org Firefox pages redirect there.
- Windows, macOS, Linux: download from firefox.com. Many Linux distributions also ship Firefox in their own repositories.
- Android: Firefox on Google Play, published by Mozilla.
- iPhone and iPad: only through the App Store. Firefox for iOS uses Apple’s WebKit engine rather than the Gecko engine used on desktop.
Mozilla also makes Firefox Focus, a separate private-browsing app for Android and iOS.
Cost
Firefox is free on every platform. The Google Play and App Store listings show it as free.
Requirements
Mozilla’s system requirements page lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.15 or later. On Linux it lists libraries rather than distributions, including glibc 2.17 or higher, GTK+ 3.14 or higher and libstdc++ 4.8.1 or higher. The App Store listing requires iOS 15.0 or later.
Safety notes
Browsers are a popular target for fake installers and modified APKs. Install Firefox from firefox.com, Google Play or the App Store, and let it update itself. Add-ons should come from addons.mozilla.org.
Moving from another browser
Firefox can import bookmarks, history and saved passwords from other browsers during setup or later from its settings. If you use several devices, sign in with a Mozilla account on each one to sync your data.
