Avidemux is a free, open-source video editor that its developers describe as “designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks”. It is not a multi-track timeline editor. It is a practical tool for removing adverts from a recording, cutting a clip out of a longer file, applying a filter such as resize or deinterlace, or converting a video to another codec.
It suits people who need one clear job done on a video file and find full editors too heavy for that.
How to get the official version
The project’s home is avidemux.sourceforge.net. Its download page lists version 2.8.1 for:
- Windows: a 64-bit installer.
- macOS: a DMG built with Qt6 and labelled for macOS Monterey.
- Linux: a 64-bit universal AppImage, a “legacy” AppImage for older systems, and the source code.
The download page sends you to FossHub for the binaries and to the project’s SourceForge file area as a mirror. The same 2.8.1 files are also attached to the developer’s GitHub release, which is what the winget package Avidemux.Avidemux installs from. Nightly builds are linked separately and are meant for testing.
Price and account
Avidemux is free software under the GNU GPL. It has no ads, accounts or paid tier.
An older but current release
Version 2.8.1 was released on 23 September 2022 and is still the current stable release on the official site. That is normal for this project, but it means the macOS build targets systems of that era. If the Mac build does not run on your machine, check the nightly builds page linked from the download page.
Safety notes
Avidemux has been around for many years, so many download portals host copies, often inside their own installers. Use the links on the official download page or the GitHub release, and check the SHA-256 value below. On Windows run Get-FileHash on the installer and compare.
Questions
Is Avidemux a replacement for a full video editor?
No. The project describes it as a tool for simple cutting, filtering and encoding. For multi-track editing with titles and transitions, look at an editor such as Shotcut or Kdenlive.
Is there a 32-bit Windows version?
The current download page lists only a 64-bit Windows installer for 2.8.1.
Where are the checksums?
The GitHub release includes a file named 2.8.1.sha256 with the hashes of the release files. We list them below.
