Special K is a free, open-source modding tool for PC games, maintained by Kaldaien and licensed under the GPL-3.0. Its site calls it “the Swiss Army Knife of PC gaming.” It offers an advanced frame limiter with VRR optimization, HDR retrofit for many games, DLSS and NVIDIA Reflex overrides, borderless and display mode overrides, and game-specific fixes. The latest GitHub build is tagged SK_26_9_25, published September 25, 2026.
When to use Special K
- You want better frame pacing, HDR or display fixes in single-player games.
- You want to override DLSS settings in games that use it.
When not to use it
- In multiplayer games with anti-cheat. The Special K wiki says: “Close Special K before playing a multiplayer game where anti-cheat protection might be present!”
- Alongside overlays that crash its launcher. The wiki says to add exceptions for
