Free to play

League of Legends is Riot Games’ free multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). Two teams of five pick champions, push down lanes and try to destroy the enemy Nexus. Riot’s store text mentions more than 150 champions, ranked play, Clash tournaments and rotating modes such as ARAM. It suits players who enjoy long-term mastery and team strategy; matches are online only.

Where to download it

  • leagueoflegends.com: the official download page installs the Riot Client for Windows or macOS.
  • Epic Games Store: listed as free, with Windows and macOS shown as platforms.
  • winget: regional installers exist, such as winget install RiotGames.LeagueOfLegends.NA or the EUW, EUNE, BR, JP, KR and LA variants.

Riot states that League is supported only on Windows and macOS, not on Linux, SteamOS or similar systems.

Price

Riot’s store text calls it “always free to play”. Skins, icons and other cosmetics are sold in the store, and Riot says crates can also be unlocked for free by playing. The Epic listing notes that the game may include in-app purchases.

Windows requirements (Riot Support, updated September 2026)

OS Windows 10 (Build 19041+) or Windows 11, TPM 2.0 enabled Windows 11, TPM 2.0 enabled

ARM processors on Windows are not supported, and Enterprise and Server editions of Windows are excluded. Since patch 25.21 a graphics card without DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 leaves the Play button greyed out.

Mac requirements

Riot lists macOS 12, an Apple M1 or newer, a Metal-capable GPU, 8 GB of unified memory and 40 GB of storage. Intel Macs can still play, but Riot says support now focuses on Apple Silicon.

Safety and fair play

Download only from Riot or the Epic Games Store. Scripting tools, “skin unlockers” and account boosting break Riot’s terms and can get the account banned.
