LibreOffice is a free, open-source office suite from The Document Foundation. It includes Writer (word processing), Calc (spreadsheets), Impress (presentations), Draw, Math and Base (databases). It uses the OpenDocument format by default and can open and save Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. The newest line is 26.8; version 26.8.0 was released on 26 August 2026.

Who it suits

  • Home users, students and small organisations that need an office suite without a subscription.
  • Linux users, for whom it is often the default office suite.
  • Anyone who needs to open old or unusual document formats.

Which version to choose

The download page offers two lines: the latest (26.8.0) with the newest features, and a previous line (26.2.6 at the time of writing) for users who prefer a longer-tested version.

How to get the official version

  • Windows, macOS, Linux: free from libreoffice.org, with builds for x86-64 and ARM64 on Windows, Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and DEB and RPM packages on Linux.
  • Microsoft Store and Mac App Store: The Document Foundation publishes LibreOffice there with a small charge to cover the work of store publishing and to support development. The version on libreoffice.org is free.
  • Android: The Document Foundation offers LibreOffice Viewer, a document viewer with experimental editing, on Google Play and F-Droid.

The Document Foundation does not publish a LibreOffice editor for iPhone. For editing on mobile, the LibreOffice site points to a separate product from Collabora, one of its partners.

Cost

Free from libreoffice.org, under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. Only the store editions carry a charge.

Requirements

Windows 10 or 11 (or Windows Server 2012 to 2022) with 1.5 GB of disk space; macOS 11 or newer on Intel or Apple silicon; Linux kernel 4.18 or higher with glibc 2.27 or higher. Java is needed only for some features, notably Base.

Safety notes

Because LibreOffice is free, sites that charge for it or bundle it with other software are not official. Download from libreoffice.org or The Document Foundation’s store listings.

Questions

Can LibreOffice open Word and Excel files?

Yes. Complex formatting or macros may not look or behave exactly the same.

Why does the Microsoft Store version cost money?

The Document Foundation says the charge covers the effort of putting the software in app stores and helps fund development. The download from libreoffice.org is the same free software.

Can I install it with winget?

Yes: winget install TheDocumentFoundation.LibreOffice.
