Magic: The Gathering Arena (MTG Arena) is Wizards of the Coast’s official digital version of Magic: The Gathering, the original fantasy collectible card game. You build decks, battle friends and other players online, and unlock cards as you play. It suits existing Magic players who want to play digitally and newcomers who want to learn the game for free.

Official platforms

  • Steam: free, and listed for both Windows and macOS.
  • Wizards of the Coast: the MTG Arena page on magic.wizards.com is the official home of the game.
  • App Store: from Wizards of the Coast LLC; iOS 15 or later.
  • Google Play: from Wizards of the Coast LLC.

Steam lists cross-platform multiplayer, and the game uses a Wizards Account, which Steam lists as required. That account holds your collection across devices.

Paying for cards

Arena is free to play. The ESRB descriptor on Steam says “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)”, so some paid items have random contents.

Ratings

Steam shows ESRB T (Teen) for blood and gore and mild fantasy violence, with users interacting online, and PEGI 12 for horror and in-game purchases. Google Play in the US shows Teen, and the App Store shows 12+.

Minimum requirements (Steam)

OS Windows 7 macOS 10.12 (Sierra)

A broadband connection is required on both. These minimums have not been updated in a long time.

Staying safe

Sites offering “free gems” codes or modified Arena clients are not connected to Wizards of the Coast and can steal your Wizards Account. Install only from the stores and site above; cheating or using modified clients breaks Wizards’ terms and can get the account banned.
