ShareX is a free, open-source screenshot and screen recording tool for Windows. It captures a region, window or full screen, records video or GIFs, lets you annotate the result in its image editor, and can upload it to a wide range of destinations. It also includes tools such as a colour picker, OCR, a QR code reader and a hash checker. Version 21.0.0 was released on 3 July 2026 and added a background remover and an image comparer.

How to get the official version
The ShareX README lists four official sources: getsharex.com, the GitHub releases page, the Microsoft Store and Steam. GitHub has a setup installer and a portable ZIP.
ShareX is Windows-only. There is no official version for macOS, Linux, Android or iPhone.
Cost
Free, under the GNU GPL version 3. The Steam and Microsoft Store editions are free too.
Requirements
64-bit Windows 10 or later. The ShareX changelog explains that version 18.0.0 moved the app to .NET 9, which only supports Windows 10 64-bit or higher, so Windows 7 is no longer supported. .NET 9 is bundled, so you do not install it separately.
