Telegram is a free messaging app with private chats, large groups, broadcast channels, voice and video calls, and file sharing. Messages are stored in Telegram’s cloud so you can use the same account on several devices at once. The official desktop app, Telegram Desktop, is open source; its current version is 7.2.9, released on 17 September 2026.

What to know about privacy
Regular Telegram chats are stored in the cloud. End-to-end encryption is available through Secret Chats, which work only on the device where they were started. Choose accordingly for sensitive conversations.
How to get the official version
- Windows and Linux: Telegram Desktop from desktop.telegram.org (installer or portable for Windows; tar.xz, Flatpak or Snap for Linux), or from the GitHub releases page.
- macOS: Telegram lists two official apps: Telegram Desktop, and a native Telegram for macOS at macos.telegram.org, which is also on the Mac App Store.
- Android: Telegram on Google Play, published by Telegram FZ-LLC. Telegram also offers a direct APK from its own site at telegram.org/android. Do not install Telegram APKs from any other site.
- iPhone and iPad: only through the App Store, seller Telegram FZ-LLC.
Cost
Telegram is free. Telegram Premium is an optional paid subscription that unlocks extra features. The Google Play listing shows in-app purchases.
Requirements
The Telegram Desktop README lists Windows 7 and above, macOS 10.13 and above, and 64-bit Linux. The App Store listing requires iOS 13.0 or later.
Safety notes
Modified Telegram apps and fake “Telegram Premium” APKs circulate widely and can steal accounts. Telegram says its apps are open source and support reproducible builds, so the store versions can be checked against the published code. Use only the sources above. Store age ratings differ: the App Store shows 12+ and Google Play (US) shows Mature 17+.
