Short answer: Windows 11 26H2 is available, but its Windows Update offer is being rolled out gradually to eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices. A missing offer alone does not prove that Windows Update is broken or that your PC has a compatibility hold. First distinguish no upgrade offer, an update that started and failed, and a missing feature after the version is installed.
Official-source review — 12 October 2026 UTC: We checked Microsoft’s rollout, release-health, safeguard and installation guidance. The decision table and worksheet below are our practical synthesis of those documents. We did not upgrade a PC, reproduce an installation error or diagnose a hold on a reader’s device.
Start with what your PC actually shows
Press Windows + R, enter winver, and record the version and full OS build. Open Settings → System → About for the Windows edition and system type. Then copy the exact message from Settings → Windows Update. An error code, an unavailable feature and an absent version offer need different investigations.
Microsoft’s servicing table lists 26H2 as generally available from 29 September 2026, with build family 26300. The nearby families are 24H2 / 26100, 25H2 / 26200 and device-specific 26H1 / 28000. These are family identifiers, not a claim that every full build in a family is current. Our Windows version comparison explains the separate servicing paths.
| What you observe | What it establishes | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| 24H2 or 25H2; no 26H2 offer | The target version has not been offered here. The reason is not established. | Follow the missing-offer checks below. |
| A compatibility message or device-specific safeguard details | Use the actual notice and matching issue, rather than a guess from the version number. | Review the notice, the relevant release-health entry and its current resolution. |
| Work or school PC; update settings managed | Deployment may be controlled by your organization. | Ask IT which release and schedule apply; retain its policy. |
| 26H1 is installed | This device is on a different release path. | Continue its supported OEM and Windows servicing; see the 26H1 section. |
| Download or installation begins, then errors | This is an update failure with an observable stage. | Use the error route with the exact code and update name. |
| winver already says 26H2; a feature is absent | The version upgrade is not the missing item. | Check that feature’s rollout and requirements separately. |
If the 26H2 offer is missing
1. Check the rollout before trying to repair Windows
Microsoft’s 26H2 launch guidance describes a controlled rollout for eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs. It directs users seeking early availability to Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available in Windows Update. Choosing this setting can lead to delivery when the device is eligible; it does not guarantee an immediate offer or remove a compatibility safeguard.
Read the current 26H2 rollout status, not a cached launch screenshot. General availability and an offer for a particular PC are different facts. Two computers receiving the update on different days does not identify a fault by itself.
2. Review the message and the correct known-issues page
A safeguard hold can prevent an affected device from being offered a feature update while a compatibility issue is investigated and fixed. Microsoft recommends against a manual upgrade while the issue and hold remain unresolved. A public known-issue entry is not, by itself, proof that your device is affected or held.
If Windows Update supplies a Learn more link with a compatibility notice, follow that device’s link and retain any issue identifier. KB5006965 explains this kind of device-specific information. Its example wording is not a promise that every 26H2 PC shows the same banner. Not every third-party hold is publicly disclosed, so an empty public list does not prove the absence of a device-specific restriction.
3. Check whether updates are paused or managed
Read the visible Windows Update status: paused updates, a pending restart and organization-managed settings are useful evidence to record. Complete ordinary updates and requested restarts at an appropriate time, with your work saved. If the PC belongs to a workplace or school, ask its administrator about the target release and deployment schedule. Do not remove update policies just to make an offer appear.
Keep hardware eligibility separate from rollout. Our PC Health Check guide covers failed hardware requirements; passing that check is not proof that 26H2 is ready for the device today.
4. Plan around your edition’s support deadline
For 24H2 Home/Pro, normal updates end on 13 October 2026; Enterprise/Education 24H2 have a different date. Use the edition-specific deadline guide. Do not interpret a gradual rollout as permission to leave an affected release unserviced indefinitely. If an offer is absent near the deadline, use Microsoft or your organization’s support route to establish an applicable supported plan.
Why a 26H1 PC is a different case
Microsoft’s 26H1 explanation describes a different Windows core for selected new hardware. It says these devices cannot take the annual feature update in the second half of 2026, while monthly security, quality and feature servicing continues. It mentions a future release path without promising its version or date.
Keep an OEM-supplied 26H1 device on its supported servicing path. Do not substitute a 25H2 or 26H2 image merely because another PC received it. Arm-based hardware alone does not establish that a device runs 26H1: check its actual installed version.
If the update started but failed
Record the exact update title, error code, stage and time. A cumulative KB failing to install is not automatically a failed 26H2 feature upgrade. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter uses Get Help for Windows 11 update errors. Use that documented route for a real failure, then match the result to the problem you observed.
Preserve the result before repeating a procedure. Changing registry values, removing update policies or clearing update folders without an established diagnosis can remove useful context. This guide does not claim that those actions unlock a gradual rollout, and we did not reproduce an error or a successful fix on a test PC.
If 26H2 is installed but a feature is missing
Confirm the full build and the exact feature name. A version label, a monthly update and availability of an individual feature are separate checks. Microsoft says 26H2 brings together innovations from earlier servicing; its release-health page remains the place to review current release issues. For a particular feature, consult its own current documentation and any hardware or account requirements.
Reinstalling the same version is not a diagnosis of a missing feature. If seeking help, describe the expected control and where it is absent, rather than reporting only “26H2 did not work.”
Should you use Installation Assistant or an ISO?
The official download page currently labels its release 2026 Update / 26H2 and asks users to review release health first. Installation Assistant is for x64 processors; the Media Creation Tool creates x64 media, with Arm64 ISO information supplied separately. Choosing an installer must match the device, architecture, language and intended retention of apps and files.
An ISO’s availability does not establish that a Windows Update hold has been resolved. Before choosing manual installation, confirm the device’s applicable route and preserve a usable backup and recovery information. For an unresolved compatibility hold, follow Microsoft’s hold guidance rather than treating manual media as the first fix. We have not tested Assistant or ISO installation or measured an upgrade outcome for this guide.
A worksheet to keep before asking for help
Copy these six fields into a local note. You do not need to share a product key, serial number, account email or recovery key to describe the missing offer.
- Installed version and full build: from winver.
- Edition and system type: from System → About.
- Exact Windows Update message: no offer, compatibility notice, paused, restart pending or error.
- Management: personal PC or work/school deployment.
- Named update and stage: only if downloading or installing began.
- Source checked and date: rollout page, issue identifier if actually shown, and any official resolution.
The next useful step is the one supported by this record: wait within a supported servicing plan, investigate a real compatibility notice, ask the administrator, or troubleshoot a named failure. The worksheet cannot determine a hidden rollout rule or guarantee when Microsoft will offer the update.
