Destiny 2 is Bungie’s first-person science-fiction shooter with role-playing progression. You play a Guardian defending the Last City of humanity, choosing between three classes (the armoured Titan, the mystic Warlock and the agile Hunter), and you collect gear through story missions, co-operative activities and PvP. It suits players who like shooters with loot and friends to play with.
Download and platforms
On PC, Destiny 2 is free on Steam. Bungie’s own site at bungie.net carries news, account management and links to where to play. Steam lists Windows as the only PC platform.
Free versus paid content
The base game is listed on Steam as a free “Commercial License”. That is not the whole of Destiny 2, though: the Steam page lists a range of paid DLC for the game. Steam also lists in-app purchases. Before you commit a lot of time, check on the store page which activities need a paid expansion. The free version is a good way to find out whether you like the combat.
Operating system support
Bungie’s note on the Steam page says Destiny 2 ended support for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 on 4 June 2024. You need 64-bit Windows 10 or later.
Minimum requirements (Steam)
- 64-bit processor and Windows 10 64-bit (latest service pack)
- Intel Core i3 3250 3.5 GHz or Pentium G4560 3.5 GHz, or AMD FX-4350 4.2 GHz
- 6 GB RAM

Rating
Steam shows ESRB T (Teen) for blood, language and violence, with online interactions not rated by the ESRB, and PEGI 16 for violence and in-game purchases.
Keep your account safe
Sites selling boosts, cheap currency or “recovered” accounts are a common way to lose a Destiny account. Cheating software breaks the publisher’s rules and can get the account banned. Install from Steam and manage your account only through bungie.net.
