digiKam is an advanced, open-source digital photo management application for Linux, Windows and macOS, and part of the KDE family. It handles the whole path from memory card to sharing: importing photos, raw files and videos from cameras and storage devices, organising them in albums, tagging, rating and labelling them, and searching by tags, dates, location and EXIF, IPTC or XMP metadata. The project also lists AI-powered tools that classify items in your collection automatically.

It suits photographers and families with large libraries who want a desktop catalogue that works with folders on their own disks rather than a cloud service.

How to get the official version

The digiKam download page offered version 9.1.0, announced on 7 June 2026, as:

  • Windows: a 64-bit installer for Windows 10 or later.
  • macOS: separate packages for Apple Silicon (macOS 11.3 or later) and Intel (macOS 10.15 or later).
  • Linux: a universal Intel AppImage that needs glibc 2.31 or newer. Distribution packages also exist, but the project notes they may be outdated.

The files come from KDE’s download server, download.kde.org. On Windows you can also run winget install KDE.digiKam, which installs the same 9.1.0 bundle.

Qt6 or Qt5?

The project recommends the Qt6 bundles because they are the most up to date. Qt5 bundles remain only for backward compatibility and are due to be deprecated.

Price and account

digiKam is free and open source. It has no account, subscription or ads. Donations are optional.

Verify your download

All digiKam files are signed with GnuPG, and the download page links the public key used to verify them. On Linux, the project suggests AppImageLauncher to integrate the AppImage with your desktop.

Weekly snapshots

digiKam also publishes weekly pre-release snapshots for Linux, macOS and Windows. The team says these are for testing only. Use the stable release for your real photo library, and keep a backup of the digiKam database before trying a snapshot.

Questions

Should I use my Linux distribution’s package instead?

You can, but the project warns that distribution versions may be outdated. macOS and Windows users should use the official bundles from digikam.org.

Can digiKam handle raw files and video?

Yes. The project lists photos, raw files and videos as supported import types.

Where are older versions?

The download page links an archive of all previous stable versions, each with a Linux AppImage, macOS package and Windows installer.
