Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application. You draw the plan of your house, place furniture on it and view the result in 3D, all in one program, and you can export 3D photo and video renderings. It is an open-source project distributed under the GNU General Public License and is available in 29 languages. It suits homeowners planning a renovation, students and anyone who wants to try layouts before moving furniture.
Free desktop version or paid store versions?
This is the part people most often get wrong. The official download page describes two kinds of installer:
- Free version: downloaded through SourceForge.net from links on sweethome3d.com. The free Windows installer is bundled with 100 pieces of furniture and 26 textures, and the free macOS version with 929 pieces of furniture and 26 textures.
- Paid versions: on the Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store. They update automatically and include much larger libraries (more than 10,000 pieces of furniture and 423 textures).
You can add more free furniture and textures to the free version from the project’s resources pages. The site also offers Sweet Home 3D Online, which runs in a browser, and mobile apps for iOS and Android. The App Store listing shows a different seller name from the desktop project, so open the store pages from the links on sweethome3d.com rather than from search.
How to get the free version
- Windows: the installer, bundled with its own copy of Java. Run it and follow the wizard.
- macOS:
SweetHome3D-7.5-macosx.dmgfor Mac OS X 10.9 or later, or a separate DMG for 10.4 to 10.9. If macOS refuses to open it, Control-click the app and choose Open. - Linux: 32-bit and 64-bit installers.
A portable 7z package and a JAR file for other systems are also listed. On Windows, winget install eTeks.SweetHome3D installs the free 7.5 installer from SourceForge.
Version
The free desktop downloads are version 7.5, released on 21 August 2024. A 7.5.2 update on 29 August 2024 fixed a bug in the browser-based JS versions, not the desktop program.

Is Sweet Home 3D really free?
Yes. The desktop program from sweethome3d.com is free and open source. Only the store editions, which come with bigger furniture libraries, are paid.
Why does my free copy have less furniture than the screenshots?
The free installers include a smaller library. You can import extra models and textures, or buy the store edition.
Do I need to install Java?
No, not with the installers. The Windows installer is bundled with a private copy of Java.
