Bitwarden Password Manager stores logins and other vault items across desktop apps, browser extensions and mobile apps. Its free personal plan covers basic password management; optional subscriptions add features. Choose the official app for your device and plan how to preserve access before moving existing passwords.
Choose an official app
The Bitwarden download page links its browser extensions, Windows, macOS and Linux desktop apps, web vault and Android and Apple mobile apps. Start there to reach the correct store or project release. Bitwarden Authenticator is a separate app; it is not another name for Password Manager.
The Windows selector currently lists Windows 11 with x86, x64 and ARM64 options. Check the current platform requirements before downloading for an older system. The portable Windows app does not auto-update; you must maintain it yourself. Desktop, mobile, browser and server version numbers can differ, so a desktop release number does not certify every other app is on the same build.
Desktop release and a measured installer check
The latest non-prerelease desktop entry we found in the publisher’s client repository was Desktop 2026.9.0, published 17 September 2026. We downloaded Bitwarden-Installer-2026.9.0.exe from that release on 30 September 2026 UTC.
The file measured 734,240 bytes. Its locally calculated SHA-256 matched that exact GitHub asset’s published digest:
6af475c43bea3e5578f6e441ac6d90e830e77c54e0707db738af9f0dc53f5180
On our Windows machine, Get-AuthenticodeSignature returned Valid, signature type Authenticode, with signer Bitwarden Inc. We did not execute this small installer or measure the files it would subsequently install. Its size is not the installed application’s disk requirement.
These observations cover this named file only. Read our signature-check guide to distinguish a valid signature from a hash comparison. Neither observation is a complete security audit of the service.
Free and paid personal plans
The pricing page, checked on 30 September 2026 UTC, lists basic personal password management as free. Premium costs US$19.80 per year, displayed as US$1.65 per month with annual billing. It adds an integrated authenticator, attachments, emergency access and security reports. Families costs US$47.88 per year for up to six users. Prices shown are in USD before taxes and may change.
Check the plan comparison for sharing and organisation limits before subscribing. A monthly equivalent shown on the page does not mean you are paying that amount month by month.
Source code and verification scope
The client repository’s licence notice uses GPLv3 by default, with specified code under Bitwarden License v1.0. Calling the entire repository uniformly GPLv3 would omit that distinction. We reviewed official documentation and checked the downloaded Windows installer; we did not test autofill, create a vault, import passwords, restore a backup or independently audit encryption.
Before importing existing passwords
Plan a backup and check which vault items your export format includes. Our Bitwarden encrypted-export guide explains the difference between account-restricted and password-protected exports. Do not assume a sync service and an independent restorable backup solve the same problem.
