Immich is a free, open-source, self-hosted photo and video management app. You run the server at home with Docker, and the Android and iOS apps back up your camera roll to it. It is licensed under the GNU AGPL v3. Version 3.2.2 was released on September 15, 2026.

When to use Immich

You want your photo library on your own server, with phone backup and a web interface.
You have a Linux machine or VM with at least 6 GB of RAM.

When not to use it

As your only copy of your photos. Immich says to follow a 3-2-1 backup plan. Its database backups do not include photos or videos.
On Windows or macOS if you can avoid it. Immich strongly discourages non-Linux systems. On Windows it points to Docker Desktop or WSL 2.
In a Proxmox LXC container. Immich does not recommend Docker in LXC; use a full VM.

Install and verify

Download docker-compose.yml and example.env from the GitHub release, compare their SHA-256 with the values below, rename the env file to .env, and run docker compose up -d. Our Immich install guide covers each step and backups.

Is Immich free?

Yes, to self-host. Immich also sells optional product keys to support development.
