TrueNAS Community Edition is a free, open-source storage operating system from iXsystems, built on OpenZFS. It serves files over SMB and NFS, runs apps and virtual machines, and is managed from a web interface. It was called TrueNAS SCALE until the 25.04 release in April 2025, and the 25.10 ISO still carries the SCALE name. Version 25.10.7 was released on September 2, 2026.
When to use TrueNAS
- You want a NAS with ZFS data protection and no license cost.
- You can give it dedicated hardware and matching drives for a pool.
When not to use it
- For production data inside a VM. The TrueNAS hardware guide says virtualized TrueNAS is not safe for regular deployment with production or critical data.
- If you want to mix many drive sizes. ZFS pools work best with matching drives. See TrueNAS vs Unraid.
- If you need TrueNAS CORE. TrueNAS says CORE is no longer under active development.
