Jellyfin is a free, open-source media server. You run the Jellyfin server on your own computer, NAS or container, point it at your films, TV shows and music, and stream them to phones, TVs and web browsers. It is built by volunteers and licensed under the GNU GPL. Jellyfin Server 12.1, a bug-fix release, was published on September 15, 2026.

Who it suits

People who keep their own media library and want to run the whole system themselves, with no paid features. Jellyfin describes it as streaming “from your own server, with no strings attached”.

Get the official server

  • Windows: installers (.exe) and ZIP archives, via jellyfin.org/downloads/windows.
  • macOS: .dmg installers and .tar.xz archives, via jellyfin.org/downloads/macos.
  • Linux: the official APT repository or .deb files for Debian and Ubuntu, and self-contained .tar.gz archives for other distributions, via jellyfin.org/downloads/linux. Arch and Gentoo packages are marked “OS Package” and the Fedora/CentOS route through RPMFusion is marked “Community”.
  • Docker: official images on Docker Hub and GHCR, listed on jellyfin.org.

Before upgrading, the Jellyfin team asks you to take a full backup.

Get the official apps

  • Android: Google Play or F-Droid.
  • iPhone and iPad: Jellyfin Mobile on the App Store.
  • TVs and consoles: official apps for Android TV and Fire TV, Roku, LG webOS, Samsung Tizen and Xbox, plus Jellyfin Media Player for desktops and the JellyCon add-on for Kodi.

Many third-party Jellyfin clients exist in the app stores. jellyfin.org labels which clients are “Official”; the ones above are.

Price

Everything is free. Jellyfin notes that the Roku store may say a cable or satellite subscription is required because of a store limitation, but no subscription of any kind is needed for the server or any official client.

Is Jellyfin really free?

Yes. It is Free Software under the GNU GPL; you can use, study, modify and redistribute it, as long as changes are licensed the same way.

Which desktop app should I use?

Jellyfin Media Player is the official desktop client,, published through the jellyfin-media-player GitHub releases.

Can I install the server with winget?

Yes: winget install Jellyfin.Server downloads from repo.jellyfin.org.
