Is DLSS Swapper Safe? The July 2026 Malware Warning Explained

Short answer: Is DLSS Swapper safe? The official app, from github.com/beeradmoore/dlss-swapper or winget, is open source and code-signed, and no official build has been reported as compromised. The July 2026 malware warning was about something else: people posting DLL files in the project’s GitHub repositories with comments like “this fixed it for me.” The developer said those files are likely malware. Only use DLLs offered inside the app, and do not swap files in online games. The developer says that can get you banned.

Where the real DLSS Swapper lives

DLSS Swapper is developed by Brad Moore, who publishes on GitHub as beeradmoore. The README is explicit: “Please be aware of malicious sites claiming to be DLSS Swapper. This is the only place you will find official downloads.” It lists two official ways to get the app:

• The GitHub releases page at github.com/beeradmoore/dlss-swapper/releases
• Windows Package Manager: winget install --id=beeradmoore.dlss-swapper -e

The README’s official links are the GitHub repository, the @dlss_swapper account on X (Twitter) and the r/DLSS_Swapper subreddit. It asks users to ignore any other account or site that claims to be DLSS Swapper and to report it through a GitHub issue.

What happened in July 2026: the DLL warning

This is the incident people half-remember, so here is exactly what the reporting says.

• July 8, 2026. The developer posted a warning on X, embedded in Tom’s Hardware’s story: people were “uploading DLLs into the DLSS Swapper / Manifest Builder repositories” with comments like “this fixed it for me.” His advice was: “DO NOT download these files, they are likely malware.”
• Tom’s Hardware, July 8, 2026 (Hassam Nasir). It explained the mechanism. DLSS Swapper only shows a DLL in the app once its hashes match official sources. But the app can also detect unknown DLLs from newly installed games, and Tom’s Hardware says those are uploaded to the repository as issues. Users can also upload their own DLLs. Those files are not vetted. The article says the tool itself is safe, along with the verified files it hosts.
• TechSpot, July 9, 2026 (Alfonso Maruccia). It reported that officially supported DLLs are vetted before they go into a DLSS Swapper release, that Moore warned DLLs from third parties should be treated as potentially dangerous, and that a sample he shared was identified as malware by VirusTotal.

So the answer to “fake site or compromised build?” is neither. No official DLSS Swapper release was tampered with. The danger was unvetted DLL files posted in GitHub issues by third parties. Both articles also note that the developer had earlier warned about a fake DLSS Swapper website. Neither names the domain, so we do not either.

Why it matters: a DLL is executable code. A game loads it with the same rights the game has. A malicious “DLSS” file can do anything other malware can do.

Ban risk in online games

A user asked on the project’s GitHub in March 2025 whether it is safe to swap DLSS in online games. The developer’s answer on March 2, 2025: “No it is not safe. Changing a file to one the system does not expect may be flagged by anti-cheat and get you banned.”

• Use DLSS Swapper only in games without online anti-cheat.
• Before playing a multiplayer game you have swapped, restore the original DLL (see below).
• If you have an NVIDIA RTX card, the NVIDIA App’s DLSS Override updates supported games to newer DLSS models through NVIDIA’s own software. That is a different mechanism from replacing files in the game folder.

The current release, checked

We read these values from GitHub’s releases API on September 26, 2026, and re-hashed the installer ourselves.

Signed. We checked the 1.2.6.1 installer. Its Authenticode signature is valid and the signer is the SignPath Foundation. The README credits SignPath for free code signing. The project is licensed under GPL-3.0.

Winget lags. When we checked, the newest DLSS Swapper version in the winget community repository was 1.2.5.0, one release behind GitHub.

Requirements: Windows 10 64-bit, version 20H1 (build 19041) or later. The README lists “Any” GPU. The app finds games from Steam, GOG, Epic Games, Ubisoft Connect, the Xbox app and Battle.net, or games you add by hand.

Is DLSS Swapper safe to download? How to verify it

1. Check the URL. It must start with https://github.com/beeradmoore/dlss-swapper/releases/.
2. Compare the hash. In PowerShell:

   Get-FileHash .\DLSS.Swapper-1.2.6.1-installer.exe -Algorithm SHA256

   It must match the digest on the GitHub release page, or the table above.

3. Check the signature. Right-click the installer, open Properties > Digital Signatures, and confirm the signer is SignPath Foundation.
4. Only use DLLs the app offers. Do not download DLLs from GitHub issues, Discord messages or forum posts. That is exactly what the July 2026 warning was about.

What DLSS Swapper does, and what it does not

DLSS Swapper downloads, manages and swaps the DLSS, FSR and XeSS DLL files inside games. That lets you move a game to a newer or older version of the same upscaler without waiting for a game update. The README is careful about its limits:

• It does not add DLSS to games that do not support it.
• It does not guarantee better performance, fewer artifacts or a crash-free experience. The README says a swap can fix some issues and in other cases stop a game from launching until you restore the original.

If you want to use a different upscaler rather than a different version, that is a job for OptiScaler, which carries the same warning about online games.

How to undo a swap

The developer explained on GitHub in April 2025 that DLSS Swapper leaves a backup of the original DLL in the game folder. In the app, open the game, go to the menu where you choose the DLL version and click Reset. If the Reset button is missing, the DLL is already back to the original, or something else deleted the backup. In that case, use your launcher’s “verify files” or “repair” option to restore the game’s own files.

Is DLSS Swapper a virus?

No official release has been reported as malicious, and the installer is code-signed. The July 2026 warning was about third-party DLL files posted in its GitHub repositories, not about the app.
