Release check — 30 September 2026: this entry now lists V281 from the publisher’s stable release. The file sizes and SHA-256 values below come from that release’s asset metadata. This is a source check, not an installation test or malware scan.

Fan Control is a free Windows utility for building custom fan curves. It reads temperatures from your CPU, GPU, motherboard and drives, and sets the speed of each fan from rules you define: graphs, linear curves, mixes of several sensors, and fine-tuning such as hysteresis and response time. It is made by Rémi Mercier (Rem0o). The program is free to use for personal and non-commercial purposes, and its source is closed. Its main sensor library, LibreHardwareMonitor, is open source.

When to use Fan Control

  • A desktop PC whose BIOS fan control is too basic or too noisy.
  • Tying case fans to GPU temperature, which most BIOS menus cannot do.
  • Keeping fans away from a speed that rattles, using calibration “avoid points.”

When not to use it

  • On most laptops. The developer’s FAQ says it mostly does not work on laptops, because their fans are not exposed to third-party software. On ASUS laptops, see G-Helper.
  • If you run version 237 or older. Those versions ship the WinRing0 driver, which has a published vulnerability (CVE-2020-14979) and is flagged by Microsoft Defender. Update instead of adding an exclusion.

Requirements

Windows 10 or Windows 11. Choose a build: net_10_0 needs Microsoft’s .NET 10 Desktop Runtime; net_4_8 uses .NET Framework 4.8, which Windows 10 version 1903 and later and Windows 11 already include. Motherboard sensors need the PawnIO driver, which Fan Control offers to install on first run. You can decline, but you lose motherboard sensors.

Verify your download

Download only from github.com/Rem0o/FanControl.Releases or through getfancontrol.com, the developer’s site, which links to the same releases. FanControl.exe is signed: Properties > Digital Signatures should show “Rémi Mercier.” Compare the hash below with Get-FileHash. Questions

Why did Windows Defender flag Fan Control as Vigorf.A?

Since September 4, 2025, Defender has flagged FanControl.sys, the WinRing0 driver in V237 and older, as Trojan:Win32/Vigorf.A. The developer called it another WinRing0 detection. V238 and later do not ship WinRing0.

Is getfancontrol.com official?

Yes. The developer’s GitHub README links to it. It can list an older version than GitHub, so check the number.

How do I uninstall it completely?

Untick start-with-Windows or delete the “Fan Control” task in Task Scheduler, then uninstall or delete the folder. PawnIO is removed separately. The developer suggests Safe Mode if it refuses.

Can I install it with winget?

Yes: winget install Rem0o.FanControl. The README also lists Scoop and Chocolatey.

Licence check – 11 October 2026: The publisher’s licence limits use to personal and non-commercial purposes and requires prior consent for redistribution. An open-source sensor library does not make Fan Control itself open source or give it that library’s licence. No installation or hardware test was performed for this licence review.
