Check your copy in PowerShell with Get-FileHash .\KeePassXC-2.7.12-Win64.msi. The result must match the table exactly.

KeePassXC is a free, open-source password manager that keeps your passwords in an encrypted database file on your own computer. It does not use a cloud service of its own: you decide where the file lives and how, or whether, it is synced. The database format is compatible with KeePass and other KeePass-based apps. Version 2.7.12 was released on 10 March 2026.

Who it suits

  • People who want a password manager without an account or subscription.
  • Users who prefer to control where their encrypted data is stored.
  • Linux and mixed-OS households that need one app across Windows, macOS and Linux.

What it does not do

KeePassXC does not sync your database between devices by itself, and nobody can recover your data if you lose the master password and key file. Keep a backup of the database.

How to get the official version

  • Windows: MSI installer or portable ZIP from keepassxc.org/download or GitHub, or the Microsoft Store.
  • macOS: disk images for Apple Silicon and Intel, or brew install --cask keepassxc.
  • Linux: AppImage, Flatpak on Flathub, Snap, or your distribution’s packages.

There is no official KeePassXC app for Android or iPhone. The KeePassXC FAQ says the team does not make a mobile app and suggests KeePassDX or KeePass2Android on Android, and Strongbox or KeePassium on iOS, which can open the same database. These are separate projects.

Cost

Free, under the GNU GPL. The project accepts donations.

Requirements

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. A separate legacy installer supports Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. 32-bit Windows is not supported after version 2.6.6. macOS 12 or newer; the site points users of macOS 11 and below to MacPorts.

Safety notes

A password manager is a high-value target, so verify what you install. Each download on the official site has a PGP signature and a SHA-256 digest, and the site explains how to verify signatures. The hashes below come from GitHub.

Questions

Is KeePassXC the same as KeePass?

No. It is a separate, cross-platform application that uses the same database format.

Can it fill passwords in my browser?

Yes, with the official KeePassXC-Browser extension for Firefox, Chrome and Edge.

Can I install it with winget?

Yes: winget install -e --id KeePassXCTeam.KeePassXC.
