VLC media player is VideoLAN’s free, open-source player for video, audio, discs and network streams. The desktop release reviewed here is 3.0.24, released on 22 September 2026. This page helps you choose the official Windows file and includes measurements from three downloads we inspected.
Which VLC Windows download should I choose?
On Windows 10 or 11, open Settings → System → About and read System type under Device specifications. Match both the operating system and processor. “64-bit” alone does not tell you whether to choose x64 or ARM64.
- 64-bit Windows, x64-based processor: choose the win64 release directory. Its installer is
vlc-3.0.24-win64.exe. The x64 family covers compatible Intel and AMD processors; it does not mean AMD computers only. - 64-bit Windows, ARM-based processor: choose the winarm64 release directory. Its installer is
vlc-3.0.24-winarm64.exe. Do not choose x64 merely because your Windows installation is 64-bit. - 32-bit Windows: choose the win32 release directory and
vlc-3.0.24-win32.exe. A 64-bit processor can have a 32-bit operating system, so read both parts of System type.
Microsoft documents where to find these details in its 32-bit and 64-bit Windows FAQ and ARM PC identification instructions. The filenames above were checked in VideoLAN’s release directories; we did not download or run those EXE installers.
EXE installer or ZIP archive?
For an ordinary Windows installation, start with the EXE offered by VideoLAN’s Windows page for your architecture. The release directories also contain MSI packages and ZIP or 7z archives. Use MSI when that is the package format you specifically need; do not rename an archive to make it an installer.
Our three ZIP downloads contained vlc.exe, libvlccore.dll and plugin entries inside a vlc-3.0.24 folder. If you choose an archive, extract the whole folder and keep its files together. Copying only vlc.exe or opening that one file from inside ZIP leaves out the other components. This guidance follows the observed archive layout; we did not test running VLC from an extracted folder.
A filename ending in .sha256 is a checksum companion, not the application. Files labelled debugsym are a separate debugging package, not the normal player download. If your problem is a source-code ZIP from GitHub, use our ZIP with no EXE guide rather than looking for an installer inside source code.
What we measured in the Windows ZIP files
Scoped file check — 14 October 2026 UTC: we followed VideoLAN’s HTTPS download links to its selected mirrors, downloaded each ZIP, counted its bytes and calculated its SHA-256. Each matched the raw checksum companion for that exact filename. We also read the PE machine headers of vlc.exe and libvlccore.dll inside each ZIP.
32-bit x86: vlc-3.0.24-win32.zip — 81,365,541 bytes
Both inspected headers identify 32-bit x86. Measured SHA-256:

64-bit x64: vlc-3.0.24-win64.zip — 82,765,861 bytes
Both inspected headers identify 64-bit x64. Measured SHA-256:

64-bit ARM64: vlc-3.0.24-winarm64.zip — 76,738,526 bytes

These are ZIP sizes and hashes; they do not apply to EXE, MSI, 7z, mobile or macOS files. Read “Downloading” and the displayed filename carefully on a mirror-selection page: a checksum for the .sha256 file itself is not the checksum of your ZIP. Open the raw text companion for the exact ZIP and compare its filename as well as its hash.
You can compare a downloaded file in our browser-local SHA-256 checker. A matching hash establishes equality with that reference, not a general malware verdict. See the separate Windows digital-signature guide for signed installer checks.
Limits of this check: no installation, player execution, media playback, operating-system or device compatibility test, antivirus scan, Authenticode or GPG verification was performed. We read two selected executable headers per archive, not every member’s contents. The architecture labels use Microsoft’s PE format documentation.
Other official platforms
- macOS: use VideoLAN’s Mac page. Its default link is the 3.0.24 Universal DMG. The publisher lists 64-bit Intel and Apple Silicon support.
- Linux: follow the distribution links from VideoLAN’s download section; choose the package for your distribution.
- Android: VideoLAN’s Android page links to Google Play, under Videolabs and F-Droid.
- iPhone and iPad: follow the App Store listing, whose seller is VideoLAN. It lists iOS 9.0 or later.
Mobile releases have their own version numbers. VideoLAN announced Android 3.7.0 in February 2026 and iOS 3.7.0 in January 2026; those are dated announcements, not a claim that either remains the newest store version. Check the listing for your platform.
Cost, privacy and compatibility
VLC is free. VideoLAN describes the player as ad-free and without user tracking. Platform privacy disclosures need their own reading: Google Play’s developer declaration reports no collection or sharing, while the App Store’s developer declaration lists crash and performance diagnostics not linked to identity. These are publisher declarations, not our independent privacy audit.
VideoLAN’s Windows page lists compatibility from XP SP3 through Windows 11. This is its VLC compatibility statement; it does not extend Microsoft’s support for an operating system. We did not verify VLC on those Windows versions. The Mac and mobile pages provide their own requirements.
Is VLC 3.0.24 worth updating to?
VideoLAN’s 22 September 2026 announcement reports more than 130 security fixes across VLC and its bundled libraries, including an FFmpeg update from 4.4 to 8.1.2. That is the publisher’s reason to update; our archive checks did not assess those vulnerabilities.
How do I avoid the wrong download?
Begin at VideoLAN’s established site, then follow its platform and mirror links. Do not treat a familiar logo, a similar domain name or an HTTPS lock as proof of the publisher. Our download-source verification guide explains the source chain and the limits of host matching.
