Steam Deck ‘An Error Occurred While Rendering’ and Decky Loader Fix

By Updated Checked against official sources on 17 Oct 2026

Short answer: On a Steam Deck with Decky Loader, “An error occurred while rendering this content” usually means part of the Steam interface crashed. Users most often report it right after a Steam client or SteamOS update, when Decky or one of its plugins stops working with the new client. Start with “Disable Decky until next boot” so you can use the device. Then go to Desktop Mode, re-run the Decky installer and pick the stable release. If that fails, try the prerelease. If the error comes back, move plugins out of ~/homebrew/plugins one at a time until you find the one causing it. The current Decky stable release is v3.2.10, published on 4 October 2026.

Official-source review — 17 October 2026 UTC: We checked the Decky Loader README, its GitHub releases and bug reports, decky.xyz, the Bazzite documentation and the Bazzite setup-decky recipe source, Valve’s Steam Deck news feed, Steam Community threads and GamingOnLinux. We did not reproduce the error. Error-screen buttons and plugin names below come from user reports, and we link each one.

What “An error occurred while rendering this content” means

Gaming Mode’s interface is a web-based Steam UI. When part of it throws an error it cannot recover from, Steam shows this message instead of the screen. Reports in the Decky Loader issue tracker include an “Error Reference: Shared SteamUI_…” line and a minified React error number. That is why the codes look like web-app errors and not system errors.

Decky Loader puts its menu and plugins into the Quick Access Menu. When Valve changes the Steam client, that integration can break. Decky’s README says so directly: if Decky disappears after a SteamOS update, re-run the installer. The release notes show the same pattern. v3.2.6 fixed the “June beta error boundary,” v3.2.8 supported a renamed Steam initialization API, and v3.2.9 restored fullscreen pages “on newer Steam clients.”

Decky is not always the cause. In a 2024 Steam bug-report thread about a similar “Something went wrong while displaying this content” screen, some affected users had no plugins installed. One poster said the problem stopped after a later Steam update.

Decky is a community project, and decky.xyz says it is meant for the stock SteamOS that ships on the Steam Deck. For a first install, see our Decky Loader install guide and the Decky Loader software page.

The safe order of fixes

Do these in order. Each step changes more than the one before, so stop when the error goes away.

  1. Restart. Use the buttons on the error screen or the Power menu. One Steam Community user listed the options as try again, restart Steam, restart Deck and “disable decky until the next boot.” They said restarting Decky helped only for a short time.
  2. Boot without Decky. Choose “Disable Decky until next boot.” Users in Decky issue #845 and a Steam Community PSA thread said Steam then ran normally and they could reach Desktop Mode. If Steam works with Decky disabled, the problem is in Decky or a plugin, not in your games or SteamOS.
  3. Reinstall Decky stable from Desktop Mode (next section).
  4. Try the Decky prerelease if stable does not fix it.
  5. Isolate the plugin if the error comes back with Decky reinstalled.
  6. Uninstall Decky completely using the official uninstaller, and wait for a fixed release.

A Decky developer quoted by GamingOnLinux in August 2024 gave a way out of a boot loop. Press Ctrl+Alt+Semicolon on a USB keyboard during boot, or use a Bluetooth keyboard you paired beforehand, to reach the desktop. That advice is from 2024, and we did not test it.

Reinstall Decky Loader: stable first, then prerelease

The Decky README gives these steps:

  1. Press the Steam button, open Power, and choose Switch to Desktop.
  2. Download decky_installer.desktop from Decky’s official link (below). Firefox saves it as decky_installer.desktop.download, so rename it.
  3. Drag it to the desktop and double-click it. Enter your admin password, or let the installer set a temporary one.
  4. Choose Latest Release, which is the stable version for most users.
  5. Use the “Return to Gaming Mode” shortcut.

If stable does not fix it, run the installer again and choose Latest Pre-Release. The README calls the prerelease less stable and intended for plugin developers. It also recommends this order for the “Decky disappeared after an update” case. Prereleases sometimes ship a Steam-compatibility fix first. In issue #903, the Quick Access Menu loaded again on Decky 3.2.5-pre1 before the matching stable release came out. Once a newer stable release is available, go back to stable.

Keep the installer file. A Steam Community moderator recommends this, because Steam and SteamOS updates can break Decky again.

Find and remove the plugin causing it

If the error returns after a clean Decky reinstall, suspect a plugin. You can update, uninstall and reload plugins from the gear icon in the Decky menu, according to the Decky repository. If the menu will not open, use Desktop Mode. Plugins are stored in ~/homebrew/plugins, as shown in issue #838 and Bazzite’s own Decky recipe.

  1. Open Konsole and list your plugins.
  2. Move one plugin out of the folder. Moving it keeps the plugin and its files, so you can put it back. The folder can be owned by root, so sudo may be needed.
  3. Reboot. A Decky contributor in issue #838 says to reboot after clearing plugins before you judge the result.
  4. Repeat until the error stops. The last plugin you moved is the suspect. Check for an update to it before you reinstall it.
ls ~/homebrew/plugins
mkdir -p ~/decky-disabled
sudo mv ~/homebrew/plugins/PLUGIN-FOLDER ~/decky-disabled/

Users have blamed many plugins in different reports, including ShareDeck-y, TabMaster, Emuchievements, a Bluetooth plugin, HLTB and CSS Loader. None of these was confirmed as a root cause, and the fixes differed from user to user, so a plugin on that list may not be your problem. Before you file a bug, issue #845 asks for Decky, SteamOS and Steam client versions plus logs:

journalctl -b0 -u plugin_loader.service > ~/deckylog.txt
ls ~/.steam/steam/logs/cef_log.txt ~/.steam/steam/logs/cef_log.previous.txt

Bazzite: use ujust setup-decky

On Bazzite, you manage Decky with a ujust recipe. The Bazzite ujust documentation lists ujust setup-decky as “Install and configure Decky Loader.” The recipe source accepts these options: status, install, install-prerelease and uninstall. Each one calls Decky’s own installer or uninstaller scripts. Do not run it with sudo, because the recipe refuses.

ujust setup-decky
ujust setup-decky install
ujust setup-decky install-prerelease
ujust setup-decky uninstall
ujust --show setup-decky

The Bazzite quirks page says the related “Something went wrong while displaying this content” error is likely caused by a broken Decky plugin, and that some CSS Loader themes can trigger it. It also notes that some plugins are made for Steam Deck hardware only. If Gaming Mode will not start because of the Steam client itself, Bazzite recommends Bazzite Portal → Troubleshoot → Reset Steam installation, followed by a reboot. Decky’s site does not officially support other operating systems, so Bazzite owners may get help faster from Bazzite’s forums than from Decky’s tracker. When it is not Decky: Steam client and SteamOS channels

If the error continues with Decky disabled or uninstalled, look at Steam itself. Valve ships Steam client and SteamOS updates on separate channels. On Valve’s Steam Deck news feed, SteamOS 3.9.3 Beta (16 October 2026) is listed as “for the SteamOS Beta and Preview channels.” Valve says you can choose your channel in Settings → System → System Update Channel. The same feed lists a Steam Client Update for the Stable channel on 13 October 2026, and Beta client updates on 13, 15 and 16 October.

Beta builds are where Decky breaks first. Several Decky releases name a specific Steam beta they fixed. In issue #903, some users said switching the Steam client back to stable helped. If you use Decky and want fewer surprises, stay on Stable. If you are on Beta or Preview, you may also see problems that Valve has not fixed yet.

What not to do

  • Do not run random scripts from forums or videos. Use only the installer and the install_release.sh and uninstall.sh scripts linked from Decky’s README, or Bazzite’s own ujust recipe. A command posted in a thread can delete files or install something you did not ask for.
  • Do not factory reset first. One user in the PSA thread reset their Deck. Disabling Decky, reinstalling it and isolating plugins come first, and they keep your data.
  • Do not delete plugin folders blindly with rm -rf. Move them, so you can restore their settings later.
  • Do not change folder permissions to “fix” it. In issue #845, changing the plugin folder’s ownership helped one user and did nothing for another.
  • Do not stay on the prerelease forever. Go back to stable once a fixed stable release ships.

If you only want Decky gone, Decky’s official uninstaller does it. Run the installer again in Desktop Mode and choose “uninstall decky loader,” or use the Konsole command from the README:

curl -L https://github.com/SteamDeckHomebrew/decky-installer/releases/latest/download/uninstall.sh | sh
