Home Assistant is a free, open-source home automation platform that runs on your own hardware, so it keeps working when the internet is down. Home Assistant OS (HAOS) is the recommended way to install it. It is a minimal operating system that runs Home Assistant and its apps (formerly called add-ons) on a Raspberry Pi, a PC or a virtual machine. Home Assistant OS 18.3 was released on September 17, 2026.

Supported install methods

Home Assistant OS: recommended. Includes apps, one-click updates and backups.
Home Assistant Container: Docker on Linux. No apps and no one-click updates.

Home Assistant deprecated the Core and Supervised methods, and 32-bit systems, on May 22, 2025, and ended support with release 2025.12. Our Home Assistant install methods guide explains each route.

When not to use Home Assistant OS

On a Raspberry Pi 3 or older Pi for HAOS. Home Assistant lists the Pi 4 or 5 with at least 2 GB of RAM for HAOS.
If you need the machine for other software. Run HAOS as a VM, for example on Proxmox VE.
With Docker Desktop. Home Assistant says Container needs Docker Engine, and Docker Desktop will not work.

Verify your download

On a Raspberry Pi, Raspberry Pi Imager downloads the image for you. If you download an image from GitHub yourself, compare the SHA-256 below with Get-FileHash, shasum -a 256 or sha256sum before extracting it.

Which image do I need for Proxmox?

The KVM/Proxmox .qcow2 image, in a VM with UEFI, at least 2 GB of RAM and 2 vCPUs.
