The short answer: 3ds Max costs US$2,010 per year on the annual plan, or US$255 per month if you pay monthly. Below is the full 2026 pricing, how the pay-as-you-go option compares, the legitimate ways to use it for free, and the alternatives worth a look if the price does not work.
All figures are Autodesk United States list prices, read directly from Autodesk’s own store on 29 August 2026. Prices vary by region and currency — confirm on your local Autodesk site before buying.
3ds Max pricing in 2026
| Plan | Price | Works out at |
|---|---|---|
| Annual subscription | US$168/month, billed annually | US$2,010/year |
| Monthly subscription | US$255/month | US$3,060/year |
| Flex (pay-as-you-go) | From US$99 for 33 tokens | 6 tokens per day of use |
3ds Max is the cheapest of Autodesk’s major creative products, at the same tier as Maya and about 4% below AutoCAD. Monthly billing costs roughly 52% more over a year than the annual plan.
Is Flex cheaper for you?
Flex is Autodesk’s pay-as-you-go option. You buy tokens up front — a minimum pack of 33 for US$99, which is US$3 per token — and 3ds Max costs 6 tokens for a day of use, so about US$18 per day. A day means 24 hours from first use.
Against the annual subscription, Flex wins if you open 3ds Max fewer than roughly 112 days a year. Above that the subscription is cheaper. Flex suits reviewers and occasional collaborators; it does not suit anyone using the software weekly.
The legitimate ways to use 3ds Max for free
- The free trial — the complete application for a limited period, from Autodesk’s 3ds Max trial page.
- Education access — students and educators at qualifying institutions get free access to 3ds Max through Autodesk Education. You verify once and it renews while you remain eligible. Educational licences are for learning, not commercial work.
- Previous releases — an Autodesk subscription has historically included the right to install several recent previous versions, so you do not have to move to the newest release if your office standard is older. Confirm the current terms in your Autodesk Account.
If a site offers 3ds Max as an archive with a password, that is not a licence. Softwares Academy does not host or distribute Autodesk installers, licence keys or activation tools.
Alternatives to 3ds Max
3ds Max is strongest in architectural visualisation and modelling, and that is exactly where the alternatives have improved most.
- Blender — free and open source, with Cycles and EEVEE rendering. For arch-viz it is now a serious replacement, not a compromise.
- Cinema 4D — faster to learn than Max, and the default in motion graphics.
- SketchUp with V-Ray — a much cheaper route for architectural modelling and visualisation if you do not need Max’s full toolset.
- Rhino — a perpetual licence rather than a subscription, and strong on freeform NURBS modelling.
- Maya — Autodesk’s sibling at the same price. Max for modelling and viz, Maya for character animation.

What we would actually do
- Architectural visualisation as your job: the annual subscription, and price the three-year term.
- Freelance or building a portfolio: Blender. The rendering quality gap no longer justifies US$2,010 a year for most freelancers.
- Modelling only, no animation: consider SketchUp plus a renderer instead.
- Occasional use: Flex, cheaper under about 112 days a year.
- Student or educator: Autodesk Education access, free while eligible.
