Blender vs 3ds Max: Is Free Good Enough Now?

For a long time the answer was easy: Blender was the hobbyist tool and 3ds Max was what studios paid for. That stopped being true a few years ago, and the comparison now genuinely depends on who you are rather than what the software can do.

The cost, stated plainly

Where 3ds Max still wins

  • The arch-viz plugin ecosystem. V-Ray, Corona, Forest Pack, RailClone — the tools that make large architectural scenes tractable grew up around Max. Blender has alternatives but not equivalents, and for scattering vegetation across a site or managing a hundred-material scene, this is a real gap.
  • Studio pipelines. If the studio runs Max, you run Max. That is not a technical argument, it is an employment one.
  • CAD interoperability. Max ingests DWG, RVT and SAT more cleanly, which matters if your models start life in AutoCAD or Revit.
  • The modifier stack. Non-destructive, reorderable, and still one of the better modelling workflows anywhere.

Where Blender has caught up or passed

  • Rendering. Cycles is a competent production path tracer and EEVEE Next is genuinely fast for look development. This was the last big gap and it has closed.
  • Sculpting and retopology — better than Max out of the box.
  • Geometry Nodes — procedural modelling with no direct Max equivalent at this price.
  • Compositing, video editing, tracking — included, where Max sends you elsewhere.
  • Learning material. The volume of free, current Blender tutorials now exceeds Max by a wide margin.

The honest recommendation

  • Freelancer or building a portfolio: Blender. The US$2,010 a year buys you a much better GPU instead, and the GPU affects your renders more than the software does.
  • Employed at a Max studio: Max. Not a choice.
  • Arch-viz as your main trade, with clients expecting V-Ray or Corona scenes: Max, for the ecosystem — but test Blender with one real project before you renew.
  • On macOS or Linux: Blender, because Max does not run there.
  • Learning, undecided: Blender first. If you later need Max, the modelling concepts transfer; the money does not come back.
