Revit is the most expensive product in the mainstream Autodesk line — about 43% more than AutoCAD. Paying monthly costs roughly 52% more per year than the annual plan (US$4,560 against US$3,005), so monthly only makes sense for a short, defined project. A three-year term is also available and locks your rate.
Is Flex cheaper for you?
Flex is Autodesk’s pay-as-you-go option. You buy tokens up front — a minimum pack of 33 for US$99, which is US$3 per token — and Revit costs 10 tokens for a day of use, so about US$30 per day. A day means 24 hours from first use.
Against the annual subscription, Flex wins if you open Revit fewer than roughly 100 days a year. Above that the subscription is cheaper. Flex suits reviewers and occasional collaborators; it does not suit anyone using the software weekly.
The legitimate ways to use Revit for free
- The free trial — the complete application for a limited period, from Autodesk’s Revit trial page.
- Education access — students and educators at qualifying institutions get free access to Revit through Autodesk Education. You verify once and it renews while you remain eligible. Educational licences are for learning, not commercial work.
- Previous releases — an Autodesk subscription has historically included the right to install several recent previous versions, so you do not have to move to the newest release if your office standard is older. Confirm the current terms in your Autodesk Account.
If a site offers Revit as an archive with a password, that is not a licence. Softwares Academy does not host or distribute Autodesk installers, licence keys or activation tools.
Alternatives to Revit
Revit’s competition is real, and one of the strongest options is free. Note that BIM alternatives are judged mostly on IFC exchange quality — if your team must hand files to a Revit office, test that first.
- Blender with the Bonsai add-on — free and open source, and now genuinely IFC-native BIM authoring. The strongest zero-cost route into BIM, with Blender’s rendering on top.
- Archicad (Graphisoft) — the long-standing direct competitor, strong on architectural design and documentation, with a mature IFC workflow.
- Vectorworks Architect — popular with architects who want more freeform modelling alongside BIM.
- BricsCAD BIM — cheaper, with a perpetual-licence option, and native DWG which matters if your practice is AutoCAD-based.
- FreeCAD’s BIM workbench — free, improving, but not yet a like-for-like replacement on large coordinated projects.
