This is not a features race. AutoCAD draws. Revit models. Everything else — the US$910 a year price gap, the doubled hardware requirement, the learning curve — follows from that one distinction. Pick the wrong one and you will spend a year fighting the software.
The difference in one paragraph
In AutoCAD you draw a wall as two parallel lines. If the wall moves, you move the lines, and you move them again on the section, and again on the elevation. In Revit you place a wall — an object that knows its height, material, fire rating and cost. Move it once and every plan, section, elevation and schedule updates itself. That is the whole pitch, and it is also the whole cost: Revit demands that you model the building before you can draw it.

The hardware line is the one people underestimate. Revit’s minimum memory is double AutoCAD’s, and Autodesk qualifies even that: 16 GB is described as sufficient for a single model of roughly 300 MB. Real project models on a real team routinely exceed that. And the disk figure is not a typo — Autodesk recommends 100 GB of free space for temporary files on top of the 30 GB install.
Choose AutoCAD when
- Your deliverable is a set of 2D drawings and nobody downstream needs a model.
- You work across disciplines that do not model — surveying, fabrication details, site plans, as-builts.
- Your clients send you DWG and expect DWG back.
- The project is small enough that coordination happens in someone’s head rather than in software.
- You need the specialised toolsets — Electrical, Mechanical, Plant 3D — which have no Revit equivalent.
Choose Revit when
- Someone will ask for clash detection, quantities or a coordinated model.
- You work with structural and MEP consultants who model.
- The client or the jurisdiction asks for BIM deliverables or IFC.
- Changes are frequent — Revit’s payoff is entirely in change management.
- You produce schedules that must always match the drawings.
The trap: using Revit as a drafting tool
The most expensive mistake in this comparison is buying Revit and then drawing in it — placing detail lines instead of modelling, exporting to DWG for everything, treating it as AutoCAD with extra steps. You get the higher licence cost, the heavier hardware and the steeper learning curve, and none of the benefit. If your workflow is genuinely 2D, AutoCAD is not the lesser choice; it is the correct one.
They are not mutually exclusive
